Sunday morning in Launceston.

Finally got a chance to get out and about and try out my new Fujifilm X-T4 and a combination of new lenses. After years of lugging around full frame DSLR kit it’s so liberating to have such lighter and capable equipment. Spent 90 minutes just driving around the CBD and outer suburbs looking for opportunities.

Launceston Doors

Recently walked the streets of Launnie photographing the street art, architecture and noticed how many interesting doors and doorways there were. I’ve put a little collage together of a few of them.

Launceston Snow - Birdseye View

What a truly amazing experience it was to have such incredible snowfall last Wednesday in downtown Launceston. Something that most people have never experienced. My neighbour who is 75 said that he remembers similar snowfall when he was just 5. For most of us it was probably a once in a lifetime experience. I woke the family at 1.30 am and we all went out into the front yard and frolicked in the snow for an hour before jumping in the car and driving around the CBD. Everything was completely covered in soft powdery snow. Unfortunately it didn’t hang around too long and was mostly melted by late afternoon. I did have an opportunity to get my drone up before work to capture some of the snow covered neighbourhood including our house. Enjoy.

Self Project #5 - Launceston Clouds

Here in Launceston we often get incredible skies both at dawn and dusk. I took the opportunity to capture a few of the interesting cloud formations this week. I have only made minor tweaks to contrast and sharpening so the colours you see are very accurate to the real colours.

Prince's Square - Launceston

Another image that I took in the thick of Launceston’s fog on Saturday morning. I love all the parks in Launceston and the local council do a fantastic job of maintaining them.

Self Project # 4

For this weeks project I got the opportunity to experience the thick fog of Launceston. Launceston is renowned for its thick lingering fog, mist and climatic anomalies. On this particular morning the fog hung around into the early afternoon. It reallyI does really create a unique, creative and sometimes difficult photography experience.

Self Project # 3

On Friday I spent a few hours wandering the CBD of Launceston taking images of street art, graffiti and bill posting. To my surprise I had to look quite hard to try and find great street art. The best street art was found at the local skatepark……….. go figure 🤪 I’d the love Launceston Council to commission some local talent to brighten up some of the dull, grey areas of downtown Launceston.

Here is a collage of a few of the works that I found.

Dawn @ Cataract Gorge

A brisk 1 degree this morning for my walk at Cataract Gorge. Lots of mist and frost. Such a great way to start the day.

Misty Morning

A beautiful still and misty morning in Launceston today. Such a great place to live and raise the family.

Self Project #2

For my week #2 self project I decided to photograph a local phenomon in Launceston …… strange little garages. Many of the houses in Launceston were built over 100 years ago so cars weren’t the priority they are today. Even 50 years ago housing your family car wasn’t a huge priority hence the very small detached garges seen today in and around Launceston. It is almost like the garages was an afterthought or a later addition. So different from the spacious and salubrious garages of today’s modern homes.

Self Project #1

In order to push myself creatively I have decided to take the on challenge of doing a weekly photographic project with a new theme each week. Not sure how long I’ll do it for but I’m up for the challenge. This weeks Self Project #1 is “Cataract Gorge”. I’ve taken many photographs here over the years but thought it was fitting to start this challenge in such a magnificent part of Launceston. It was a cold start at 7am, around 1 degree celsius but walking under clear blue skies with morning sunshine and stunning scenery I soon warmed up. Great to see so many people out and about enjoying the new more relaxed social distancing restrictions. We love Cataract Gorge and it is one of the many reasons why we moved to Launceston coming up to three years ago.

More Tassie Wilderness

You have to love living in a magical place like Tasmania, Australia. We have only been here two and a half years but I appreciate it more and more everyday. Just watching the world news each day and the horrors of a global pandemic makes me appreciate it even more. The Government has just reopend all the Tasmanian National Parks which is fantastic. Can’t wait to get back out amongst it. These two shots were taken at Liffey Falls and The Liffey River about 50km from Launceston.
